4MOST/AESOP success!

The AAO’s 4MOST/AEOSOP team passed with flying colours the Long Lead Item Final Design Review (LLI FDR) that took place at the AIP in Potsdam this week. The feedback received at the end of the review was “A very successful review for the AESOP team!”. Having reached and passed this significant milestone in the project, the team now moves on to the task of constructing and assembling 2,400 ‘echidna’ spine positions required for AESOP.

Agreement Signed to Build 4MOST.

ESO has signed an agreement with a consortium led by the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP) [1] to build 4MOST, a unique, next-generation spectroscopic instrument which will be mounted on the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in northern Chile.

eRosita Workshop; synergy with WAVES.

WAVES PI (Driver) and WAVES-Deep PS (Davies) attended eROSITA MPI Ringberg workshop in Germany to discuss synergy between WAVES and eROSITA. Specific emphasis was placed on the combination of the WAVES-deep groups/clusters and eROSITA, with potential projects involving group stacking to extend x-ray scaling relations to lower group masses. Other potential synergies are combinations of the WAVES-Deep redshifts, radio continuum measurements in the WAVES-Deep regions from DINGO (and possibly ATCA & MWA) and x-ray AGN detections from eROSITA, to compare optically-bright AGN, radio-bright AGN, x-ray-bright AGN, and star-forming galaxies. Also in attendance were WAVES team members Owers, Merloni, Hopkins, Sadler, Seymour, Popesso and McMahon.

Version 2 of the WAVES Survey Management Plan (SMP) and Survey Science Plan (SSP) released.

The SMP for WAVES provides a brief summary of the survey science, a detailed breakdown of the expected work packages and involvement with the 4MOST Infrastructure Working Groups (IWGs), the team structure and the schedule. The SMP is accompanied by the SSP, which contains the preliminary science case and survey strategy, as well as the Science and User Requirements scientific requirements for the 4MOST instrument.

Simulations Group Update [Chris Power]

The N-body simulation programme supporting WAVES and more broadly 4MOST galaxy formation and cosmology projects is well under way. We have 1.5 million CPU hours on the Pawsey supercomputing centre in Perth, WA, to run a suite of simulations of volumes ranging in size from 40 Mpc/h to 1680 Mpc/h on a side, containing up to ~70 billion particles (see table), with sufficient time resolution to capture the growth of the dark matter halo population in detail. The outputs from these simulations are being coupled to the semi-analytic galaxy formation model, GALFORM, to make predictions for the galaxy population as a function of redshift, and we are making light cones available that are tailored to the various requirements of WAVES. By their nature, these are multi wavelength datasets, so we have additional information about the properties of galaxies in HI, X-rays, etc... Efforts in this area will be supplemented later in 2016 by the addition of at least new PhD student to work on improving and extending out light cone modelling and to study how WAVES-wide can be used to place limits on dark matter models.

WAVES presentation at WFIRST meeting

Australian P.I Simon Driver attended the international meeting "Community Astrophysics with WFIRST: Guest Observer and Archival Science" in Pasadena from 29 Feb through to 2 March 2016. WFIRST is an upcoming NASA mission which will utilise an existing 2.4m telescope to provide deep wide near-IR imaging, GRISM, and IFU capabilities.
A presentation was made promoting the adoption of the WAVES-Deep regions within the WFIRST footprint. WFIRST is scheduled for launch in 2025 and will conduct a 2200 sq deg survey of the Southern Galactic Cap at 0.1’’ resolution from 0.76 to 2microns, and reaching sensitivities of 26.7 AB mag (5sigma point source detection). Such a dataset would allow for routine bulge-disc decomposition of all the WAVES-Deep galaxies extending from z=0.1 to 1.

Successful ARC LIEF bid plus University contributions awards a total of $880k towards continued construction of AESOP

Simon Driver and Aaron Robotham (WAVES co-PI and WAVES-Wide PS) at the University of Western Australia successfully led a second ARC LIEF bid for continued funding of the Australian–European Southern Observatory Positioner (AESOP). Combined with University contributions of $437.4k, a total of $880k additional funds have been raised this year.

This funding is in addition to the previous ARC LIEF award, University partners contributions and AAO development costs, reaching a total of $1.8Million towards AESOP development.

Successful first 4MOST All-Hands meeting

The first ‘All Hands Meeting’ of the 4MOST consortium took place over 28th September - 2nd October 2015 at Cambridge University (UK), at which the full WAVES Project Office was in attendance.

Participants included the engineers, managers and scientists responsible for the delivery of the 4MOST Facility, scientists from the institutes involved in defining the consortium science surveys, as well as the applications specialists involved in the infrastructure groups.

All aspects of the 4MOST project were discussed, including updates on instrument development and construction, science operations and preparing for the upcoming project milestones. Breakout sessions encouraged new interfaces between various surveys, subsystems work packages and infrastructure working groups in order to develop management plans and outline key milestones in preparation for 4MOST PDR and ESO deadlines.

WAVES design concept paper accepted and available online

First publication from the WAVES team outlying the contemporary survey design and science goals accepted and available online (Driver et. al., 2015). Paper is from conference proceeding of "The Universe of the Digital Sky Surveys" which took places at the Observatory of Capodimonte, Naples, on 25th-28th November 2014. Published in Astrophysics and Space Science Proceedings and edited by Longo, Napolitano, Marconi, Paolillo, Iodice.

ARC LIEF award plus University partners provide 1.2million towards construction of AESOP

The Australian Research Council announced ~$600k LINKAGE INFRASTRUCTURE, EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES (LIEF) funding for the Australian–European Southern Observatory Positioner (AESOP). This funding is in addition to University partners contributions and AAO development costs, reaching a total of $1.2Million towards AESOP development.

WAVES accepted as a 4MOST Consortium Science Survey

WAVES was accepted as one of the eight 4MOST consortium science surveys which will govern survey strategy and instrumentation design.
